The dust sensor inside has an infrared LED and an IR receptor. This allows it to detect even the smallest interruption of the light flux from the diodes to the detector and to register this as a dust particle. It is also effective in detecting other finer particles, such as those found in cigarette smoke. It gives an analog value as output, which you can connect to the analog input of a microcontroller and accurately measure air quality.
